The present political, economic, social and environmental situation in the Niger Delta region presents considerable challenges. The delta, the largest in Africa, is endowed with immense natural resources, particularly crude oil.
The delta also has the third largest mangrove forest in the world and the full significance of its biodiversity remains unknown. The extraction of oil over the last thirty years has been accompanied by serious environmental problems and lack of development in local communities. This has led to major confrontations and conflict between local communities, the government and international oil companies.
The delta has also seen an expansion of agricultural activities and the conservation of forest to agricultural use. Agriculture remains the dominant economic activity of the majority of the people of delta, and significant numbers are dependent upon fisheries for their livelihoods.
These activities both have impacts on the environment, and are significantly impacted upon by the activities of the oil industry
Despite the vast oil wealth of the oil producing areas, Niger Delta region
remain poor. Anger at the inequities attributed to the oil economy has led increasing numbers of people from the communities in the oil regions to protest the exploration and exploitation of oil without benefit to them or compensation for the damage done to their land and livelihoods. Also, youths who feel excluded from the political system and the benefits of oil wealth, organize together and successfully halt production at flow stations in their areas, or prevent construction work going ahead until the multi-national oil companies have satisfied their demand or part of them. Sabotage of oil pipelines does occur, though its extent is disputed between the oil companies and the communities.
The need to mobilize the youths using environmental education as a vehicle to inculcate environmental conservation and sustainable development strategies and approaches becomes imperative, therefore Save Earth Nigeria (SEN) came into existence to meeting the challenges and some of the developmental issues facing the Niger Delta Region.
